That brand new upholstered couch looks amazing in your living room! You’ve simply fallen in love with it. But, most importantly, you want to make sure it lasts as long as possible, and retains its fresh, new look. Stains definitely work against creating such an image! So here’s a quick guide to cleaning and removing stains from upholstery!

Clean Stains Right When They Happen

Ah, Rule #1, always clean up stains immediately. Basically, the longer the stain sits, the more likely it is to become permanent. So blot them clean- never scrub the stain, as you may end up spreading the affected area.

Check the Label

Check the label on your furniture for cleaning instructions. It can contain some very valuable information! For instance, an “X,” means that the item should only be professionally cleaned. It’s better to be in the know!

Perform a Spot Test

Before using any cleaning product, find an inconspicuous area on the piece of furniture to perform a spot test. This way you could potentially avoid ruining a larger section of the piece of furniture.

Fight Food Spills and Stains

For food spills and stains, try mixing your own concoction of one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid and two cups of cold water. Dab this solution onto the stain with a clean, white cloth. Do this until all of the stain is absorbed, and your cloth is coming back dry.
