3 Ways to Keep Carpet from Staining

Carpet is cozy and cushiony; why wouldn’t we want it in our home? Well, one reason is that it can stain easily, but there are several things we can do to prevent staining and discoloration! And when times get tough, you can always rely on the professionals to remove the stain; The Steam Team specializes in that, you know! Below are three quick and simple tips for preventing staining on your carpeting!

Remove Your Shoes at the Door

Let’s start with the basics. It always helps to just remove your shoes at the door. This means that your carpet doesn’t even have the opportunity to come in contact with the dirt, sand, and mud that’s on your shoes! Place a basket or mat near the entrances to your home, and ask guests to remove their shoes, as well.

Clean Up Spills Immediately

It’s always important to clean up spills and accidents as soon as you spot them! The sooner you get to a spill, the less likely it is to stain! Whether you’re using a commercial cleaner or a homemade remedy, just make sure you tackle that stain immediately!

How to Remove candy from Your Carpet or Rugs

Ah… it’s that time of year again. The season of chocolates, lollipops, and the like. With Halloween, comes Halloween candy and sometimes it ends up in our carpets, and not in our mouths. So let’s take a look at three different types of candy and how to remove them from carpet and rugs! We have been cleaning carpet and rugs in Austin for over 40 years.

Gum

Before you grab your scissors to remove gum from your carpet, consider this method first: freeze the gum by placing a small bag of ice over the area. Once it hardens, use a scraping tool to scrape away any excess particles. Then vacuum the area thoroughly. Finally, sponge the area with warm, soapy water, and dry completely with a clean towel, making sure all of the stain has been removed!

Chocolate

There’s a whole world of chocolate lovers out there, but carpet is not one of them! To remove chocolate from your carpet, make sure it’s all dried up, and (like with the gum) scrape away any leftover pieces. Try to lift the stain with a carpet stain remover. If this doesn’t work, mix ¼ teaspoon of dishwashing detergent with a cup of lukewarm water. Pour this mixture on the affected area, and blot the carpet from the outer edge inward (as to not spread the stain).

Hard Candy

Hard candy is the stickiest of all candies, and it’s not easy to remove from carpet. But there are no tricks here- we have the answers. First, soften the candy with cool water, and scrape away any pieces that remain. Then use an enzymatic stain remover; these work best! Finally, rinse the area with a damp, clean cloth to make sure the candy has been removed.

Cleaning and Caring for Wool Rugs

Did you know that the dirt and dust that’s caught up in your rugs can rub against the carpet fibers and damage them over time? The first step to cleaning your rug is taking it outside for a  good shake! You could also hang it from a clothesline and beat the dust of out of it; it’s great therapy! Rug cleaning specialists since 1983.

You can also vacuum your rug. Make sure to do this twice a month at least, and vacuum the underside once every two months.

When it comes time to shampoo your rug, you’ll want to make sure the above steps have already been completed. Use a sponge, and a mild soap or rug shampoo. When finished, rinse it with cool, clean water, and viola, you’re done! To try the rug, hang it up outside; don’t place it in the dryer! Voted best rug cleaning company in Austin.

Stain Removal Tips for Wool Carpeted Rugs

Of course, the first step to stain removal is to always catch the spill or accident as soon as it occurs. This puts you ahead of the game! For wet stains on wool rugs, absorb as much moisture as you can by placing a clean towel over the stain and pressing your weight against it. Try using this mixture for stains: ½ tsp of dishwashing liquid, two cups of water, and ½ C of white vinegar. Use a sponge to scrub away the stain, but be as gentle as possible!
